Get your water tested

Before you begin

It helps to know what material your water pipe is made of before making the appointment. Learn how to check your pipes for lead.

Service overview

The Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) will conduct free water quality tests for customers with concerns about lead or water quality in their homes.

Who

If you have lead plumbing in your home or other water quality concerns, you can contact PWD to arrange for a free testing of your water.

Cost

There is no cost for water quality testing.

How

The process to request testing for lead and copper is different than other water quality concerns.

For lead and copper

Request home water testing for lead by filling out the form.

PWD will send you a free testing kit, including two bottles, instructions, information about lead plumbing and water quality, and a form for you to complete during testing.

Once you’ve filled the bottles, PWD will pick them up and analyze your water at the lab, and let you know the results.

For other water quality concerns

Call (215) 685-6300 to discuss other water quality issues. If necessary, we’ll schedule an appointment for a PWD representative to investigate.
